A $232 Billion Problem
Low literacy and language barriers impact our healthcare system to the tune of $232 billion a year. Patients and caregivers with lower literacy have worse health outcomes as they are less likely to understand and follow health information and instructions.
Our ApproachAnalogous to airline safety cards, our guides incorporate principles of design and adult learning. Our illustrated guides provide resources to patients and caregivers of all literacy levels and language needs.

Introducing BabySteps
According to postpartum health experts, one of the most critical things to promote infant health is to encourage and facilitate new parents’ comfort level with their new responsibilities.
BabySteps reduces barriers for new parents seeking care information by providing guidance during the days and months immediately following birth with illustrated, customizable guides that provide new parents the key do’s, don'ts, and how-to’s in an easy-to-understand format and design for the first year of baby’s life. |
Our guides address health literacy barriers, an identified cause of preventable infant death and injury. Simple guides provide the appropriate information at the right time; current approaches such as internet searches or voluminous books provide a glut of information that is difficult to reference at the moment needed.
With one card for each infant care task, cards are organized using a simple ring and parents can customize to meet their needs. Once a task, such as diapering, is mastered, that card can be saved for reference, but not kept in the guide, making room for a new relevant card, such as bathing. |
